General Information

Smoke-Free Facilities

This IS NOT a smoke free facility.

The theater itself is not a smoke-free facility excepting during performances. Dressing rooms, rehearsal studios, cafeteria, green room, and all locations outside the performance space ARE however, smoke-free.

During performances, smoking may be permitted by audience members who choose to stand to the back of the parterre section, at the sole discretion of the performing company currently performing in or renting the facility.

House specifications

Seating

House seating consists of high quality metal folding chairs. 1 row of seats consists of 4 seats on either side of the center aisle. There is no real outside aisles to speak of, though there is a few inches of space available in case of emergency.

NOTE: We are currently reviewing the actual seating arrangements. During Winter months, evening shows will require that the Parterre Section be closed. We are hoping that more seats can be brought in to the orchestra section than originally calculated.

Standard Seating
Orchestra Section3 rows (24 seats)
Parterre Section*1 row (8 seats)
Total Seating4 rows (32 seats)
Extended Seating
Orchestra Section3 rows (24 seats)
Parterre Section*2 rows (16 seats)
Total Seating5 rows (40 seats)
Compact Seating
Orchestra Section3 rows (24 seats)
Parterre Section*-
Total Seating3 rows (24 seats)
Cabaret Studio Seating**
Orchestra Section~5-20 seats
Parterre Section*~5-15 seats
Total Seating~min: 10 seats ~max: 20 seats (with extra standing room only)

* Utilizing the Parterre section requires that the studio (garage) door be open. This of course implies that the Parterre section is outside, and that is correct. If for intimacy, noise issues, or inclement weather it is necessary to close the Parterre section the Compact Seating will be used.

** Cabaret Studio Seating is the most flexible of the seating arrangements. At the minimum seating option the regular studio gear, furniture is not moved at all. This is also the normal seating used for workshops. The Cabaret seating option in almost all cases utilizes chairs that are found on-site. The high quality metal folding chairs used for more formal seating arrangements are not stored on-site and must be secured in advance of any show. Please see the chairs options under Stage Equipment for what is available for your Cabaret Studio Seating show.

Stage Specifications

Stage Floor Construction

4 x 8 3/4" Plywood on 2 x 4 risers.

Stage Floor Construction
Apron1 to back wall10‘
Apron to cyc upstage rear edge28‘
Stage width (without usuable wing space3)~16‘
Stage width (with usuable wing space3)~13‘
Proscenium height~9‘
Height to grid~9‘ 7"

Please note: The above specifications are adjustable given notice and good reason. The total available area for stage and audience with studio (garage) door closed is ~24‘ x 20‘. One row (8 seats) of Parterre seating just outside the studio (garage) door is counted in all seating counts. A second row of Parterre seating could feasibly be added either for extra seating or to make up for extra stage space created by bringing the entire stage down stage another 3‘ (effectively eliminating one row of 8 seats in the orchestra section). Adding more rows beyond the 1-2 standard rows is not feasible due to a reverse rake in the driveway towards the street.

1 e.g. theater does not have a main curtain. If you would like to donate money, materials, and/or time to design and construct a traveler system for a curtain (and mid traveler) please contact us.

2 The stage consists of (4) 4 x 8 separate sections raised ~4". The cyc is hung 2‘ from the rear wall. It is possible to easily (re)move whole sections of stage to create a custom stage area, even to create a theater in the round with a stage area of either 4 x 8 or 8 x 16. Seating capacity should not be dramatically affected by this arrangement.

3 Wing space is a unique issue at the e.g. theater facilities. Generally speaking there is little usuable wing space when attempting to utilize the full stage width, which many groups like to try. The problem is that due to an inward opening door on stage right and a small storage area to stage left, limits certain functionality without a lot of shifting. Approximately 2‘ of wing space is available (both sides of stage) without any adjustments, utilizing the house position of the legs, leaving a stage area of ~14‘ x 8‘. However the full 16‘ of stage width may be utilized while retaining ~2.5‘ of wing space on both sides of stage if: 1)There is a damn good reason 2)That reason is submitted in writing along with request of the space 3)We feel like relocating the studio supplies located in that extra space.

However, the down stage left side of stage (down stage from mid-stage) can always provide ~4‘ of wing space even with standard house masking. This also means that the effective stage width on the down stage half can always be 16‘ if no masking is used except on the upstage half. This special cirumstance occurs due to the laundry cubby. The measurments supplied in the first portion of this paragraph are measured to the front of the washer and dryer. If there is need for some serious wing space and/or a small “orchestra pit”, the washer and dryer may be removed adding ~3.5‘ of wing space down stage left. For the small “orchestra pit” you would have a total area of ~4.5‘ x 5‘

Sound Pressure Levels

Please Note: Due to the acoustic design of the performance space and noise level restrictions in residential zones, we must maintain strict DB SPL levels. At no time shall the maximum A-weighted SPL ever reach above 98dB at the center of house in row C (last row of Orchestra section).

Before 10pm dB SPL should be at a reasonable level to keep the neighbors happy.
After 10pm dB SPL will be kept under XXdB.
When using Compact or Minimum Cabaret Studio Seating there is more flexibility in levels regardless of the hour.

Loading

Front of House opens up, as it is a garage door. Anything that cannot be loaded through a garage door and fit in a standard suburban garage will not make into the theater.

Rigging

There is not currently a fly system of any kind. Anything that would normally be flown will need to be retrofitted to be hung from hooks that can be mounted at any location over stage from the grid.

Plans for a basic fly system are in the works. However, due to our unique facility design (namely being a converted garage) we have 2 x 4 rafters running up and down stage with a cross beam that runs across stage above the proscenium. Therefore any attempts to fly anything would require that they be flown in sideways and then turned to face the house. If you have time, ideas, money, or materials you would like to contribute to this upgrade, please let us know. This type of system could a backdrop or prop approximately 9‘ wide and 5‘ tall or wide and ~7-8‘ and 6‘ wide.

Rehearsal Studio

When there is not a catered event or other VIP event happening on the back patio, this is the best spot for rehearsal.

In the event that the patio is unavailable the cafeteria and/or green room will double as the rehearsal studio.

Green Room

The living room here at the house is quite comfortable and affords reasonable privacy from adoring fans.

Cafeteria

All catered events are handled by The Peasant Kitchen, owned and operated by Becky Herzberg.

There is a cafeteria on-site. However, it does not operate under regular hours. Arrangements will be made prior to your arrival regarding the use and limitations of the cafeteria by visiting company and whether or not staff from The Peasant Kitchen will be preparing or serving food.
