e.g. theater

e.g. theater offers experimental theater musical, workshop and performance opportunities in Vista, California (North County San Diego area).

e.g. theater was concieved and constructed for the primary purpose of producing the original play “What?”. This venue doubles as the creative studios of coin operated entropy, zoe, alan, and [ i ] motion design. It is a studio space manifested from the rare space of a suburban garage.

e.g. theater is an intimate venue capable of seating comfortably from 5-48 people (plus some standing room), depending on the seating configuration in use. See the Technical Specifications to learn more about the seating possibilities. While the stage itself is small, measuring a modest 16‘ x 8‘, the possibilities are endless, as it is supplied and furnished with enough lighting and audio equipment to put on fairly complex shows.

Check out some images of the e.g. theater in our gallery.

Calendar

The following is a calendar of events for coin operated entropy not just e.g. theater. Please note the locations and times of events with each listing.

Regular Events

e.g. theater
Open Mic/Workshop/Movie Time

Part of the purpose of e.g. theater is to workshop new ideas and to just hang out with friends. Almost any night of the week there is something going on. Maybe someone is playing the guitar, working on a new theatrical performance art piece, just plain being strange, or we're just watching a movie and hanging out.

Please call or email to find out if anything is going on. Because this is a creative workspace, dropping in is discouraged unless you want to become intimately involved in whatever is going on at the time. Most importantly, don't drop by out of the blue before 7pm, ever. That is when we are likely working on new projects and should not be disturbed.

Special Events

Misfit Productions
Three one act plays
July 1-24 Friday, Saturday, Sunday
Adams Avenue Studio of the Arts

Hors d'oeuvres are always served by The Peasant Kitchen catering (sometimes even light meals). Also all shows have limited seating and are by invite and reservation only for friends and family of coin operated entropy. If you are interested in attending you must contact us in advance for availability. NON-e.g. theater events will be listed as such and will include their details of cost etc...

History

The history of e.g. theater is directly linked to the history of the original play what?. It seemed appropriate that if we were going to produce our own independent production of our own independent play that we needed our own independent theater.

After doing some preliminary planning and marking out the space, we constructed the stage itself using new materials and some plywood donated by the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. The stage was painted, and two small par cans were hung on the equivalent of the first electric. From there not much happened. Jeremy Riordan of Totally Lit stage and lighting graciously supplied lighting instruments, which have yet to be hung. The play What? was indefinitely postponed and other things started to fill our time. Since then we have acquired a cyclorama/bounce, or at least a massive white backdrop (unknowingly?) donated by The Umbilical Brothers from a drop not used in Thwack. We have a sound system more than sufficient for the space. We still need some basic masking. If you have access to time, materials, or money to help acquire or sew some legs, please contact us.

From it‘s original conception, it became clear that there was a lot of possibility to workshop our own ideas, as well as provide a creative space for others locally who would like to showcase their talent. We whimsically considered the possibility of writing a new play or show every few months and then when we had hit on a winner, workshop the hell out of it, and then attempt a larger production on a “real” community stage here in the San Diego area. Also the space was intended to help create a more creative environment akin to Andy Warhol‘s factory. Thus far none of this has come to fruit. But it is fun having a stage in your studio/garage.

As this history is being written nearly a year after the adventure began, the reality of our theater workshop space may still come to reality yet. While we lazy artists get our act together, if you are a peforming artist of any kind and could use a small intimate space to workshop or showcase a new project, please contact us. Check out our Technical Specifications to learn more about the dimensions, equipment, and possibilities of the space.
